New Research Sheds Light on Hearing & Speech Disorders

Chiropractic May Play Important Role for Suffering Children

Recent research reporting on improvement in a young boy undergoing chiropractic care reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in managing children with hearing and speech disorders. The research, reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic, includes a review of the literature supporting the role of chiropractic in children suffering from a number of disorders that share their origin with hearing, speech and learning issues and calls for more research in this area.

“Numerous case studies and some clinical studies are revealing that there is a relationship between structural shifts in the spine, the nervous system and the various problems related to hearing, speech and learning” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. “These types of structural problems in the upper part of the neck obstruct the nervous system and by removing the obstruction chiropractic helps improve nerve supply.”

With everything we know about the spine and nervous system, chiropractic intervention makes perfect sense in the case of a child who has hearing loss along with speech and learning challenges.

“In fact, chiropractic is the management of choice for dealing with the structural and neurological aspects of these types of problems” remarked McCoy, adding “This child was experiencing significant disruption in quality of life as a result of his hearing loss and the medical intervention was not helping. It wasn’t until the chiropractic intervention that the child improved dramatically and in a very short time.”

The child reported on in the study presented on two occasions when he was 6 and 8 years-old with hearing loss confirmed by audiology testing. On both occasions, patient’s hearing was returned to normal following a series of chiropractic adjustments.

The parents sought the care of a chiropractor after he began to fall behind in class and his speech became difficult to understand. This was despite undergoing speech therapy for two years. They were also advised by an ear, nose and throat specialist to have tubes inserted into his ears - which they declined.

The chiropractor examined the child and found structural shifts in his upper neck and low back. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. Following chiropractic care his hearing, speech and school performance returned to normal.

The researchers reviewed other studies of chiropractic which demonstrated improvements in people suffering from hearing loss and called for more research on chiropractic, subluxation and these childhood issues.

The authors called for more research on chiropractic and the management of enuresis and constipation.
