Amy Haas DC, Ph.D Heading Team Conducting Broad Category Search of Research Literature
The Foundation for Vertebral Subluxation (FVS) has embarked on the next steps of its multi-pronged project to address questions related to the role of chiropractic care in immune function. The FVS is conducting an integrative review of the literature on the topic headed up by Amy Haas DC, Ph.D and supported by a team of researchers involved in the effort.
That team includes:
- Amy Haas DC, Ph.D - FVS Research Fellow
- Joel Alcantara DC, Ph.D (C) - Director of Research for the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association
- Christopher Kent DC, JD - FVS President
- Jon Chung DC - Private Practice of Chiropractic
- Ian Shtulman DC, DACCP - Private Practice of Chiropractic
- Christopher Long BS - FVS Research Fellow
- Suzzanne Candalaria BS - FVS Research Fellow
- Rachael Pratt DC - FVS Research Fellow
- Matthew McCoy DC, MPH - FVS Vice President
The multi-pronged project to address questions related to the role of chiropractic in immune function has multiple parts including the completion of a scoping review of chiropractic, immunity and biomarkers, a comprehensive, integrative review of the scientific literature on chiropractic and immunity, the development of research protocols, feasibility studies, development of a prospective longitudinal health outcomes study, a research conference, and the development of policy and best practice statements for practitioners and patients in an evidence informed framework.

Several aspects of the project have already been completed including:
- Immune Function, Chiropractic and Vertebral Subluxation: A Multi-Pronged Project to Address Fundamental Questions in an Evidence Informed Framework
- A Scoping Review of Chiropractic, Vertebral Subluxation and Immune Function with Implications for Development of a Protocol for Measurement of Immune Biomarkers in Chiropractic Research & the Development of Related Policy
- A Scoping Review of Salivary Tests for Immunoglobulin A, Cortisol, and C-Reactive Protein in Consideration of Their Use as Immune Biomarkers in Chiropractic Research
- A Critical Evaluation of the World Federation of Chiropractic’s Fatally Flawed Review of Immunity & Chiropractic
- Chiropractic & Immunity: The Global Burden of Vertebral Subluxation. Conference Proceedings. October 24-25, 2020. Spartanburg, SC
- Immunity & Chiropractic Clinical Practice: Best Practices
The most recent project to be completed was the Best Practices document and related Recommendations on the role of chiropractic in immune function. The Best Practices document addresses clinical care, research, autonomy, consent & free speech issues.

Dr. Haas is ideally suited for the project having completed a B.S. in Biochemistry at Bates College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Medical College of Wisconsin, also in Biochemistry. Haas completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School in Boston and has a DC degree from LIFE University College of Chiropractic. In addition to her academic background she is in full time clinical practice.
According to Dr. Haas, she and the team are ". . . in the process of compiling a broad-category search of research literature intended to link the established neurophysiological affects of the chiropractic adjustment to potential impacts on multiple integrated systems, using a dynamical systems model and drawing from multiple fields of study."
The results from this exploration are intended to add to and update our foundational knowledge of the conceptual impacts of vertebral subluxation and of the chiropractic adjustment on these interconnected and integrated systems.
According to Christopher Kent DC, JD "Along with our other immune related projects, this integrative review is intended to inform a research agenda to further elucidate the multi-factorial effects of vertebral subluxation and the chiropractic correction on immune function."
Just over one year ago the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC), the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), Parker University, several United States and International chiropractic regulatory boards and several state and national chiropractic trade associations attacked and threatened chiropractors who educated their patients, the public and their communities about the relationship between chiropractic, subluxation, the nervous system and immune function.
These groups and individuals attempted to muzzle the chiropractic profession, stifle free speech and compel chiropractors to make statements unsupported by science and research.
The attack was met with a full and complete rejection by the chiropractic profession with numerous state, national and international chiropractic trade organizations and other groups within the profession, dozens of them, representing tens of thousands of chiropractors signing a statement rejecting the false claims of the WFC, ACA and Parker University and their supporters.

Despite this, the attacks continue - including the recent publication of a hit piece on chiropractic and immunity published in JAMA Network Open. According to the authors the meaning of their finding is:
"Claims that spinal manipulative therapy is associated with changes in the immune system are premature and further clinical studies should be completed."
As was the case with the initial attack on chiropractic at the beginning of the COVID pandemic by the World Federation of Chiropractic, American Chiropractic Association and Parker University, the key audience for this paper in JAMA are policy makers and the chief goal of the paper is to tighten the muzzle already placed on chiropractors in regards to free speech and the application of evidence informed practice. Its intention is to substitute the autonomy of the doctor patient relationship for compelled speech and forced restriction on the care of patients to musculoskeletal disorders.
According to Matthew McCoy DC, MPH "All values must be fought for and vigorously defended. If you thought the Deniers would stop after being exposed for the frauds they are you were sadly mistaken. They will not stop until the management of vertebral subluxation is marginalized to the point that it cannot be practiced and they have stated this publicly."
The Foundation's efforts are supported by a group of dedicated donors intent on protecting the right of the public to receive chiropractic care focused on vertebral subluxation and the right of chiropractors to provide such care.
