Several chiropractic organizations and non-profit foundations have signed on to a series of Resolutions calling for a free and competitive marketplace in chiropractic education, licensing and practice.

The Resolutions follow a description of the history of chiropractic educational accreditation, licensing, testing and regulation. That history and related events have led to the existence of what Dr. Lawrence J. DeNardis of the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) of the U.S. Department of Education, referred to as a "virtual cartel" that enjoys a monopoly within chiropractic.

According to D. DeNardis:

"Madam Chair, we've heard charges and countercharges from I trust a wide, fairly wide spectrum of the chiropractic profession. At least that's the way it seems to me. Battles over turf, battles over philosophy, maybe battles over personal ambition, but divisions of every kind. And some of this, maybe most of it, is a consequence of, at least as I see it, a monopoly control of a profession which has led to the establishment of a virtual cartel, not unusual. There are several other professions that we deal with that have a virtual cartel control of the profession. We can't change that, but we can consider measures that will try to send a message to the prevailing control group that they should try to be more inclusive rather than less inclusive and I suggest that we try to figure out what is within our range of alternatives to do that. Because I believe if we simply hear it, discuss it, anguish over it, and then give them five years of recognition, that we haven't been the impetus for any corrective action for the profession and I worry about the profession."

It is this monopoly that has led to the widespread marginalization of the factions within the chiropractic profession that seek to educate, license and practice within a conservative model of chiropractic. In many countries and some states it is becoming nearly impossible to practice conservative chiropractic. This is illustrated by a recent paper published in a research journal controlled by Subluxation Deniers that portray chiropractors who practice in a subluxation model and caring for asymptomatic children as engaging in "Magical Thinking".

Another recent example is from the General Chiropractic Council in the United Kingdom which has recently released a draft of its new chiropractic education rules. Those rules state:

"We are clear that practices that do not meet the GCC Code, relevant clinical guidelines, and are outside the rigour of scientific evidence, are unsuitable and unacceptable. In the same way, programmes promoting and teaching unorthodox explanatory frameworks, such as life force, innate intelligence, vitalism and a belief that manipulating the spine to remove restrictions or ‘chiropractic subluxations’ can restore health more broadly, will not meet these Education Standards."

According to Christopher Kent DC, JD "These Resolutions are clear that no one is calling for the dissolution or end of any organization. The only thing these Resolutions call for is the end of a monopoly run by a Cartel." Kent continued . . . "The monopolistic language should be removed in order to allow for a free and competitive marketplace in chiropractic education, testing and practice. You would have to question the motives of anyone in chiropractic who would be against that".

The Resolutions come amid a current crisis involving the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) and the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB) as those two organizations face resignations, infighting and a power vacuum following the filing of a discrimination lawsuit.  The discrimination suit has laid bare the reality of how leaders within those organizations and state board members benefit from the flow of student loan money, state tax dollars and resources.

The Resolutions also call for an end to the use of federally back student loan money along with state tax dollars, staff and resources being used to fund this Cartel.

Chiropractic students are saddled with enough student loan debt as it is so the added burden if using student debt to fund the machinations of a monopoly cartel only adds salt to the wounds and should be viewed with outrage by those in leadership positions.

The signatories to the Resolutions are calling on other chiropractic organizations, foundations, companies and individuals to add their names in support of this effort. Over the coming weeks and months they will be putting out more information about what you can do in your state to make these changes happen.
