Published Research Highlights the Promise of Chiropractic in Co-Managing Post-Concussion Syndrome

ATLANTA, Georgia – 2023

Recent findings published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research demonstrate the significant role chiropractic care may play in the management of post-concussion syndrome. The research, co-authored by Jennifer Angerami, DC and Oliver Evans, DC, follows a 20-year-old male athlete who experienced complete relief from symptoms of post-concussion syndrome after undergoing chiropractic care.

Clinical Scenario and Outcomes

The patient sought chiropractic care 16 days after experiencing a sports-related concussion, his third in five years. Despite suffering from symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and double vision, conventional medical treatments had failed to provide relief. Chiropractic adjustments using the Thompson technique, along with neuromuscular electrical stimulation, were administered over a five-week period. Astonishingly, the patient saw a 50% reduction in symptoms following the first adjustment and became asymptomatic within a week.

A Breakthrough in Post-Concussion Management

“This case study offers promising indications that chiropractic care, when combined with other therapeutic modalities, could serve as an effective co-management strategy for people suffering from post-concussion syndrome,” stated Matthew McCoy DC, MPH, editor of the journal that published the study and a public health researcher.

McCoy further explained, “Research increasingly suggests that structural shifts in spinal alignment can interfere with neurological pathways, potentially leading to a range of health problems, including concussions. Correcting these structural abnormalities through chiropractic care not only improves spinal health but may also enhance nerve function and alleviate symptoms."

The Connection Between the Spine and the Brain

Both cervical spine injuries and concussions are traumatic injuries that can occur in various circumstances, such as car accidents, falls, or sports injuries. These injuries can co-occur, as they are often caused by the same impact force. The structural integrity of the spine and its relationship with the brain can have far-reaching implications on overall health and well-being.

“Structural shifts in the spine that obstruct nerves are exactly what chiropractic care aims to correct,” McCoy noted. “By addressing these vertebral subluxations, chiropractic treatments can improve nerve supply and function, presenting a viable treatment option for those suffering from post-concussion syndrome.”

Urgent Call for More Research

While the results of this case study are promising, more research is needed to corroborate the benefits of chiropractic care in post-concussion syndrome. Nevertheless, this case study adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the role of chiropractic in treating a host of health challenges.
