Chiropractic Care Shows Promising Results for Vertigo: A Case Study in Elderly Female

Case Report Highlights Dramatic Improvement in Vertigo and Neck Pain Symptoms after Chiropractic Adjustments

In a new case report published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research (Volume 2024, Pages 81-85), a 75-year-old female patient experienced a remarkable improvement in her symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) following chiropractic care. The case, titled “Resolution Following Chiropractic of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in an Elderly Female: A Case Report & Review of the Literature” by Andrew S. Szatkowski, DC, documents the positive health outcomes seen in a patient who presented with both vertigo and generalized cervical pain after a traumatic fall.

The patient, who had fallen from her bed onto a concrete floor, sought chiropractic care for persistent vertigo and neck pain. Upon her arrival at the chiropractic center, the patient described her vertigo symptoms as severe, rating them a 10/10. She also experienced significant discomfort in her cervical region. After a thorough examination and review of her health history, specific chiropractic adjustments were administered, focusing on the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine using the Diversified technique. These spinal adjustments aimed to correct structural misalignments—known as vertebral subluxations—that were obstructing the function of the nervous system, a common contributing factor to conditions like vertigo and chronic pain.

Over the course of six adjustment visits, the patient’s care plan included adjustments to various spinal regions. Remarkably, after the sixth adjustment, she reported a dramatic decrease in her vertigo symptoms, stating that her dizziness had diminished from a debilitating 10/10 to an astonishing 0/10. The patient also noted significant relief from her neck pain.

This case highlights the potential of chiropractic care in alleviating symptoms associated with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and cervical pain, particularly in elderly individuals. The resolution of the patient’s vertigo symptoms following chiropractic adjustments points to the effectiveness of chiropractic in reducing nerve interference caused by vertebral subluxations. As noted in the report, more research is needed to further explore the role of chiropractic care in treating vertigo, dizziness, nausea, and nystagmus.

The nervous system plays a vital role in coordinating all body functions, including balance and spatial orientation. Structural shifts in the spine can lead to nerve interference, impacting the body’s ability to maintain balance and control movement. Chiropractors focus on correcting these structural shifts, known as vertebral subluxations, to restore proper nerve function and allow the body to heal itself.

While the results of this case are promising, Dr. Szatkowski emphasizes the need for more comprehensive studies to evaluate the broader effects of chiropractic care on patients with vertigo and related symptoms. Vertigo, a condition often associated with inner ear dysfunction, may also be influenced by spinal health, especially in cases where trauma or injury has led to nerve interference.

Chiropractic care is not designed to treat conditions like fibromyalgia or BPPV directly but focuses on improving the overall function of the nervous system. By addressing vertebral subluxations, chiropractic allows the body to heal itself naturally, enhancing its ability to manage a wide range of conditions, including vertigo.

This case report opens the door to further exploration into how chiropractic adjustments may serve as a valuable, non-invasive option for individuals suffering from vertigo-related disorders. Chiropractic care continues to gain attention as a viable approach to improving spinal health, and with it, overall quality of life for patients.
