Notably, the Foundation was told that CCE would not allow any comments from attendees. Despite the response to our inquiry, the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) and American Chiropractic Association (ACA) both delivered reports during the meeting. Mr. David O'Bryon, Executive Director of the ACC, and Dr. Mike Simone, ACA Treasurer and District VI governor, delivered reports expressing their support of the recent work of the CCE. The ACC had met one day prior and shared a report on new board members as well as plans for task forces on enrollment data, residency programs, primary care, and literature synthesis on spinal manipulation. Dr. Simone reaffirmed the ACA's position on Doctors of Chiropractic as primary care physicians, consistent with the mission of the CCE.
The CCE garnered much attention from the release and subsequent adoption of new Standards for Accreditation which will take effect in January 2012. The revised standards do not make any reference to the 'subluxation,' and removed reference to chiropractic without drugs and surgery among other things. During the recent public session, the Council shared plans to develop a companion to the 2012 Standards, which would outline requirements for residency programs in chiropractic. The concern is whether this document would allow for the accreditation of residency programs which are currently outside the scope of chiropractic educational accreditation. The Foundation urges the profession to consider the potential ramifications of opening the window to residencies in areas outside the scope of the profession.
It is becoming increasingly evident that the subluxation based chiropractic community must start acting, rather than reacting, to the forces at play to permanently change the identity of our profession.
