Chiropractic Shown to Help

Recent research reporting on improvement in a 12 year old girl reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in managing children suffering from ear infections and bedwetting. The research, reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic, includes a review of the literature supporting the role of chiropractic in children suffering from ear infections and bedwetting and calls for more research in this area.

“Numerous case studies and some clinical studies are revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the various problems children suffer from like ear infections and bedwetting” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. “These types of structural shifts in the spine cause a back-up of the lymphatics and problems with the tubes draining the middle ear and they obstruct the nerves involved in bladder function. By removing the structural shifts, chiropractic helps these fluids drain, and improves nerve supply and range of motion.”

Ordinarily, children suffering from ear infections will be given antibiotics, but according to McCoy “With everything we know about the dangers of antibiotic abuse, chiropractic intervention makes perfect sense in the case of childhood ear infections. In fact, chiropractic is the treatment of choice for dealing with the structural and neurological aspects of ear infections.”

In the case of bedwetting, known medically as enuresis, all sorts of strategies are used to try and stop the child from wetting the bed, however uncovering the cause of the bed wetting which may be structural spinal shifts causing nerve obstruction is a much better strategy.

The child reported on in the study was a 12 year old adopted female who was born drug addicted with a low birth weight and suffered with ear infections and bed wetting her entire life prior to seeing a chiropractor. The girl had been under care for these conditions through traditional medical treatment procedures including 5 sets of tympanostomy tubes, antibiotics and had her tonsils removed.

The chiropractor examined the child and found abnormal posture, and structural shifts in her neck, mid and low back. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. Following chiropractic care the ear infections and bed wetting resolved.

The researchers reviewed other studies of chiropractic which demonstrated improvements in children suffering from ear infections and bedwetting and called for more research on chiropractic, subluxation and these childhood issues.
