New York Chiropractic Board States CBD Oil Not Within Scope of Practice

Board states chiropractors cannot apply it or sell it

CBD Oil is the latest craze sweeping through chiropractic and it seems as if everyone is using and recommending it - including chiropractors.

Not in New York according to the State Board.

According to the minutes of the January 2018 meeting of the New York Chiropractic Board it is not within the scope of practice, chiropractors cannot apply it, cannot sell it as a nutritional supplement and that chiropractors cannot prescribe or recommend the use of medical marijuana products to their patients.

In addition to the minutes, an email sent to the NYS Chiropractic Board office asked:

Can Cannabinoid Oil Cream be used on patients? Is it within the NYS chiropractic scope of practice? Is a prescription necessary?

The Board responded:

The answer is no. Chiropractors cannot prescribe or recommend the use of medical marijuana products to their patients. The NYS Department of Health only allows physicians and PA’s to do so for specified conditions. A chiropractor in NY could face disciplinary action from OPD for doing such. For more information, this is the link from DOH

Chiropractors practicing in New York and using CBD products are urged to review the Board's decision and act accordingly. Chiropractors in other states who are selling, prescribing and using CBD Oil are urged to contact their state board and confirm that it is within their scope.
